- פַּיְיטָן, פַּיְיטָנָא, פַּיְיטָנָהm. (פיט, v. פִּיּוּט) speaker, esp. (by adaptation to ποιήτης) composer of alphabetical acrostics, poet. Lev. R. s. 30 דהוה … פ׳ ודרשן he was teacher of Bible and of Mishnah, speaker (poet) and preacher; Pesik. Ukaḥ., p. 179a> (Ar. ed. Koh. פּוֹיְיטָן, oth. ed. פייטם, פייטס, corr. acc.); Cant. R. to III, 6 פייטויי (corr. acc.). Ib. to I, 1 הדין פ׳ כד עבידוכ׳ when a poet writes , v. אלפ״א; Koh. R. to I, 13 פּוֹיְיטָנָא.Pl. (h.) פַּיְיטָנִים. Yalk. Cant. 983 (ref. to חרוזים, Cant. 1:10) אלו הפ׳ this refers to the poets (in Israel).
